Articaine is an amide-type local anesthetic used primarily in dental procedures. It reversibly blocks nerve impulse conduction by binding to specific membrane sodium ion channels, thereby interfering with electrical excitation in the nerve.
This action slows the propagation of nerve impulses and reduces the rate of rise of the action potential, resulting in a loss of sensation at the injection site.
