Idebenone – (58186-27-9)

Idebenone is a synthetic analogue of ubiquinone (Coenzyme Q10) used primarily for the treatment of visual impairment in adolescent and adult patients with Leber’s Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON).

It functions as an electron transporter in the mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC), enhancing ATP production, reducing free radicals, and inhibiting lipid peroxidation. This mechanism helps protect mitochondrial function and reduce oxidative damage.

It is also investigated for conditions like Alzheimer’s disease, Friedreich’s ataxia, and Duchenne muscular dystrophy, though its efficacy in these areas remains under study.
