Ipamorelin is a synthetic peptide and selective agonist of the ghrelin/growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHS). It is a pentapeptide with the amino acid sequence Aib-His-D-2-Nal-D-Phe-Lys-NH2, derived from GHRP-1.
Ipamorelin significantly increases plasma growth hormone (GH) levels in both animals and humans without affecting other hormones like prolactin, FSH, LH, or TSH. Unlike some other growth hormone secretagogues, it does not stimulate ACTH or cortisol secretion, making it highly selective for GH release.
Originally developed by Novo Nordisk, it was investigated for postoperative ileus but discontinued due to lack of efficacy.
