2-PMPA (2-(Phosphonomethyl)pentanedioic acid) is a potent and selective inhibitor of glutamate carboxypeptidase II (GCPII), also known as NAALADase. It is used in research to study neurological diseases due to its ability to inhibit the breakdown of the neuropeptide N-acetyl-aspartyl-glutamate (NAAG) into N-acetylaspartate (NAA) and glutamate.
2-PMPA has shown neuroprotective effects in animal models of stroke and anti-allodynic activity in chronic constriction injury (CCI) models. It is highly polar, with multiple negative charges, making it challenging to analyze in biological matrices
