5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is a naturally occurring amino acid and chemical precursor in the biosynthesis of the neurotransmitter serotonin. It is produced from the amino acid tryptophan through the action of the enzyme tryptophan hydroxylase, which is the rate-limiting step in serotonin synthesis. 5-HTP is commonly used as a dietary supplement and medication under the name oxitriptan for treating depression and other conditions.
In the body, 5-HTP is decarboxylated to serotonin by the enzyme aromatic-L-amino-acid decarboxylase with the help of vitamin B6. This reaction occurs in both nervous tissue and the liver. 5-HTP can cross the blood-brain barrier, unlike serotonin, making it a more direct precursor for increasing serotonin levels in the brain.
