9-Methyl-β-carboline (9-Me-BC) is a heterocyclic amine belonging to the β-carboline family, with the molecular formula C12H10N2. I
9-Me-BC has shown potential in stimulating, protecting, and regenerating dopaminergic neurons, making it a candidate for research in neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s.
In vitro studies indicate it enhances tyrosine hydroxylase expression, promotes neurite outgrowth, and reduces inflammatory cytokines. Rodent studies suggest improved spatial learning, elevated hippocampal dopamine levels, and neuroprotective effects against neurotoxins like MPP+.
Additionally, 9-Me-BC inhibits monoamine oxidase A and B, further supporting its potential therapeutic applications. It is also being investigated for its photosensitizing properties.
