Adapromine is an antiviral drug of the adamantane group, related to amantadine, rimantadine, and memantine. It is marketed in Russia for the treatment and prevention of influenza.
Adapromine is an alkyl analogue of rimantadine, sharing similar antiviral activity but with a broader spectrum of action, effective against both influenza A and B viruses. Resistance to adapromine and related drugs has been observed in influenza A strains.
Studies suggest adapromine and related adamantanes may have psychostimulant-like and antidepressant-like effects, mediated via catecholaminergic processes. It was first synthesized in 1967 by DuPont.
