Ganirelix acetate is a synthetic decapeptide and a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonist. It is primarily used in assisted reproductive technology (ART) to prevent premature luteinizing hormone (LH) surges during controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH).

By competitively blocking GnRH receptors on the pituitary gland, ganirelix rapidly suppresses the secretion of LH and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), ensuring optimal timing for egg retrieval in procedures like in vitro fertilization (IVF). Unlike GnRH agonists, ganirelix does not cause an initial flare-up effect, making it a preferred choice for preventing premature ovulation.
