Flumazenil is a selective GABAA receptor antagonist used primarily to reverse the effects of benzodiazepines, particularly in cases of overdose or to counteract sedation post-surgery.
It works by competitively inhibiting the benzodiazepine binding site on the GABAA receptor complex. It is also effective in treating overdoses of non-benzodiazepine hypnotics, such as zolpidem and zopiclone.
