CE-123 is a modafinil analog and one of the most researched compounds in a series of structurally related heterocyclic derivatives.

It has shown nootropic effects in animal studies, improving learning and memory performance. CE-123 also exhibits pro-motivational properties, reversing tetrabenazine-induced motivational deficits, suggesting potential therapeutic applications for motivational disorders in humans. It acts as a dopamine reuptake inhibitor, with negligible effects on serotonin and norepinephrine transporters.

CE-123 has demonstrated enhanced memory acquisition and retrieval in animal models, with increased dopamine receptor D1R and DAT protein levels in hippocampal regions. Its pharmacokinetic profile shows effective blood-brain barrier penetration and lower elimination compared to R-modafinil.
